No.1: Tsuruga-jo/ Aizu Wakamatsu-jo (Castle) in Aizu Wakamatsu City

Tsuruga Castle is said to have originally been called Higashi Kurokawa Yakata. It was built in 1384 (the first year of the Shitoku era), at the beginning of the Muromachi period, as the residence of the samurai clan leader Naomori Ashina.
Today, the castle is regarded as an iconic symbol of Aizuwakamatsu. Reconstructed and beautifully maintained, it stands proudly within the city’s public park, welcoming visitors year-round.

The park has been open to the public free of charge since 1959 (Showa 34).
