✨ Hatsumode Guide – Shrine Manners to Know ✨
Here is a simple step-by-step guide to proper shrine etiquette:
1️⃣ Bow before entering
Pause at the torii gate and bow once before stepping inside the shrine grounds.
2️⃣ Walk respectfully
Avoid walking in the center of the path (it is considered the sacred route). Walk slightly to the side.
3️⃣ Purify at the water pavilion (Temizuya)
• Take the ladle with your right hand and pour water over your left hand.
• Switch hands and cleanse your right hand.
• Pour water into your left hand and rinse your mouth (do not touch the ladle to your mouth).
• Rinse your left hand again.
• Let the remaining water wash down the handle before placing the ladle back.
4️⃣ Offering and prayer
• Gently toss your coin into the offering box.
• Ring the bell (if there is one).
• Bow twice.
• Clap twice.
• Pray silently with gratitude.
• Finish with one final bow.
5️⃣ When leaving
Turn toward the main hall and bow once before exiting through the torii gate.
