Interview with a Koriyama-native famous actor, Mr. Toshiyuki Nishida

●What’s your favorite food in Fukushima?

I love peaches! Fukushima is full of amazing food, from fresh rice to delicious fruits. I truly admire the dedication of all the farmers and producers who make it possible.

 

●What does ‘Fukushima people’ mean to you?

Even within Fukushima, people’s personalities differ depending on the region—Hamadori, Nakadori, or Aizu. But overall, I think Fukushima residents share a certain “spirit of defiance.” In a positive sense, it means we strive to see the essence of things. For example, during the Boshin War, people from Fukushima stood up to authority, even knowing the odds were against them. We remain calm, true to ourselves, and always seek the truth.

 

●Can you share your thoughts on the Great East Japan Earthquake?

The disaster we experienced in Fukushima is not simple—it’s profoundly different. First, we need to reflect on why the people of Fukushima have had to bear such a heavy burden.

I’m just an actor, and the way I can support Fukushima is through my work. But it isn’t enough if only we try. This is a nationwide issue, a challenge for all of Japan. Both the people of Fukushima and the rest of the country need to keep it in mind and work together.

●What do you think of our Fukushima promotion video?

I’ve watched it so many times, and I still do—especially when I’m feeling tired. It really shows a lot about today’s Fukushima. In the NHK BS1 special documentary “Fukushima TIME/LAPSE: The Great Earthquake Seventh Anniversary Visual Poems,” I always notice the brightness in the eyes of Iwaki-native videographer Mr. Shimizu. His eyes seem to say, “Fukushima will never be defeated!”

 

●Do you have a favorite word from Fukushima?

I like “sasuke-neh.” It means “It’s okay” or “No problem.” I love not only the meaning—its sense of forgiveness and understanding—but also the sound of the phrase itself.

●What do you hope for Fukushima’s future?

Fukushima is unique because of its experience with the Great East Japan Earthquake. Why not use that experience to show the world our strength and resilience? This is “Fukushima Style”—the indomitable spirit of its people.

 

●Do you have a message for the children of Fukushima?

I truly hope that many of you will make your mark on the world—in science, culture, or any field you choose. Your potential is limitless. Who knows? Maybe one of you will come up with a brilliant idea for removing radioactivity!

 

Throughout the ceremony and press conference, we witnessed Mr. Nishida’s kindness, compassion, and deep appreciation for the people around him, as well as his love for Fukushima. His answers—whether about his acting career or about Fukushima—were always thoughtful, making us proud to have such an extraordinary actor from our region.

Even past 70, Mr. Nishida continues to take on new roles and performances. Let’s wish him continued success! Thank you, Mr. Nishida!
