This is the 29th, the final day of the Hachiman Festival “Asaka Kunitsuko Shrine Autumn Festival”.
Today, the 29th, marks the final day of the Hachiman Festival—Asaka Kunitsuko Shrine Autumn Festival.
Koriyama hosts the only festival in Fukushima where so many portable shrines come together.
Historically, Koriyama was part of the Nihonmatsu domain. With permission from the domain, the Mikoshi Togyo—a parade of portable shrines—began in 1765.
In the festival:
-
Togyo refers to the gods parading through the city in the portable shrines.
-
Kangyo marks the conclusion, when, after three days of Togyo, the gods return to their shrine along a designated path.
Legend has it that the gods’ desire to keep the festival alive is what causes the portable shrines to come and go throughout the city.
This year, we were thrilled to celebrate freely, without masks, making it a truly wonderful event.
Wasshoi! 🎉✨
